CENTRAL NEW YORK REGIONAL ENVIROTHON
The Envirothon an outdoor, team based educational program designed to help high school students to better understand their environment through the spirit of competition and outdoor experiences. Teachers and advisors from school districts in Madison, Chenango, Cayuga, and Onondaga Counties organize teams of students to compete in five areas of environmental study; aquatics, soils and landuse, forestry, current environmental issue, and wildlife. Students attend the event at a park or wildlife education center and rotate through each of the areas of study to take hands-on multiple choice tests. For example, the forestry station will ask students to identify tree species located at the park or measure the amount of board feet in a particular tree. At the soils test, there is a soils pit where students are asked delineate and interpret the characteristics of each soil layer. In addition to these five tests, students are required to present a solution to an oral presentation problem to a panel of resource professionals. The oral presentation is given to students about two months before the competition where they are able to research the topic and practice their presentations. A winning team from each county is awarded a $100.00 scholarship and the opportunity to compete at the New York State Envirothon.
